I started collecting blue ball jars several years ago and have found many ways to use them in my home. I have put together some great centerpiece displays to offer in my primitive country online store Hearthside Collection.

There are a variety of centerpiece options for you to choose from. Some come with candles and some come with antique zinc lids. Have you ever heard the expression "that's the best thing since sliced bread"? Well, that was a common phrase I heard growing up. And that's what comes to mind each time I look at one of our new timer candles. They are battery operated and have a timer! They stay on for 6 hours and then shut off for 18 hours. This is perfect for those long fall and winter evenings. Just switch them on when it starts to get dark and then they will stay on for the evening and come back on the next day at the same time. How cool is that?!

Thanks to one of our faithful customers, we now have a new line of custom samplers - our Family Tree Samplers! You might know, our stick family samplers have been one of our trademark specialties. Well, a few months back we were asked to create a family tree sampler using stick people. I loved the idea and got busy drawing sketches and creating this new sampler design. Aren't you thankful for indoor plumbing? I know it has been around for a long time, but I still find myself being thankful when I can shower, flush and wash on a regular basis. I do not long for the "Little House on the Prairie" days. While the weathered outhouse in a beautiful field of flowers may be picturesque and all, I'll take my hot water and soap any day!

It was about a year ago that I did a post on our bathroom remodel. It all centered around getting a new shower curtain as ~~suggested~~, strongly encouraged, by my sister. It has been VERY much summer here in northern Indiana this week, with temps in the upper 90's! With that in mind, it is a bit hard to imagine needing a soft comfy throw. Country Mountain Marketplace for all your primitive country home decor needs!!

Everybody loves to go to the mall. Why! Because there are so many great places to shop all under one roof. The same is true online. Craft malls and marketplaces are a wonderful way to find a variety of online stores that will suit all of your home decorating needs. We are excited to announce that we are the new owners of Country Mountain Marketplace!! (This was formerly called Shepherd's Mountain Marketplace)

We purchased the site in January of 2011 and decided to change the name. We wanted the change for two reasons really, the first one is kind of silly, but it was a real tongue twister for me. Not sure why ... it really wasn't that hard. I mean, it's not like it was "Sarah and Shirley Shepherd's Mountain Marketplace Shoppes" or something. And secondly, I just had a picture in my mind of what I wanted to site to look like and it involved a quaint little country shop.

Once I decided to change the name I was on a quest to find just the right picture of my "quaint little country shop". Where does one go when they want to find something? Google. I started searching for images of a country shop and eventually came across a website for Layman Family Farms Country Market in West Virginia. I saw the picture of their country market. It was just what I was looking for! I contacted them about using their photo. ( keep in mind that images on the web are not public property and you need to have permission to use them) The nice folks from Layman Family Farms graciously granted permission to use their photo!!

Right away, I went to work adjusting the image and then contacted Kim at Craftisan Graphics. She created the header for the marketplace using the photo of my "quaint little country shop". Thanks to the Kim and the Laymans, the marketplace has a homegrown, hometown, homemade, primitive country home - atmosphere.

We invite you to visit our marketplace, browse through the shops and enjoy a primitive country shop tour. We have many quality crafters and website owners who would just love to have you check out their wares. We are open 24/7 for your shopping convenience.

The Microfiber Sheets are awesome! My husband and I got a king size bed about a year ago. At that time (before these microfiber sheets were available) I purchased a set from a major home store and we were very disappointed. They were kind of "itchy" or something. I almost felt like I was sticking to them. When our Microfiber Sheets became available we purchased a set for ourselves. After our bad experience with the other sheets, I wanted to make sure I could stand behind these sheets before I offered them to my customers. We LOVE them! First of all, congratulations to Arthur for winning our Love is Patient primitive pillow for February! This last month has absolutley flown by! Is anyone else feeling like you can't keep up with time? As I look back at the month, a few things stand out.

Our youngest daughter's basketball season ended. (We are now gearing up for spring soccer). I got to spend a week with our oldest daughter. She will be graduating soon with her counseling degree and we attended the Biblical Counseling Training Conference in Lafayette, Indiana together. Besides great speakers at the conference, this time included hanging out at our motel, dining out together and some great mother-daughter talks! She is getting married in just 3 months. I cherish each moment with her. My grandma also passed away this month. She was 91 years old. Her nurses at the nursing home told me that she was everyone's favorite - always so happy. If they were having a bad day, they would go in and visit "Glady" to get cheered up.

With all of that said, I can't believe we are ready for another giveaway! This month we have chosen one of our popular pip berry wreaths! This one has cream pip berries and rusty stars on it. I hope each of you are enjoying your February! When you leave a comment to enter the drawing, I would love to know if you were in an area of the country that just went through the "Blizzard of 2011." We are in northern Indiana and we got around 10-12 inches from that storm. Most of it came overnight but I enjoyed watching out the window at the snow swirling around. It really was amazing. We do love the snow here and have enjoyed some extra family time.

Over Christmas break, my daughters helped me make my first video! I often get inquiries from my customers wanting more details about our products. I am hoping that by doing a few videos I will be able to get people more " up close and personal" with our products.

Filming the video was quite a process. The first time we started filming, my oldest daughter realized she had not pressed the "record" button like she thought. Then, after we finally had an acceptable "take", another daughter accidentally deleted the video when trying to view it. UGHH!! Family bonding time!! :) It was a very intimidating experience, to say the least, but I am pleased with our first production. I trust the next one will go a bit more smoothly.

I love an old hymnal! There is so much church history inside it's pages. As you study the well worn book, you can imagine others of all ages joining in the harmony as the congregation sings praises to God. From the youngster just learning to read, and the mother singing through tear filled eyes, to the gray haired saint who has no need to "see" the familiar words, many of us have been encouraged by the church hymnal. My daughter and her college roommate were home for a weekend visit a few Sundays ago. While sitting in the church pews before morning worship, they came up with this idea for our primitive country store. At their suggestion, we have taken pages of old, no longer used hymn books and created a framed treasure. Primitive country wedding or shower gifts have never been easier to request! After working with a customer to make some personalized samplers for each of the gals in her bridal party, we were inspired to offer gift registries for brides and grooms to use for bridal showers, or to suggest as wedding gifts. We have made these gift registries available at both of our online stores - Hearthside Collection and Primitive Star Quilt Shop!

Here's how it works:

As you are browsing our sites, click on a product you're interested in. Under the Add to Cart button you'll see the little link "Add to Gift Registries". The first time you click on that you'll need to register. You can select the wedding category, anniversary or other occasion and enter the event date. Create a passcode for your guests to enter so they can access your list of gift items. Click "Create" and your list has been started! As you add additional items, you will choose to "Add to an existing registry" and you'll see your wedding registry already created.

You are welcome to play around with this a bit. It will not be a problem if you add products and set a code to see how it works. You could even have a friend log in and use the code to try it out.

To review the products you've added, click on the "My Gift Registry" link. (At Hearthside Collection it is in the upper right hand corner box. Take a moment, think..."how long has my current shower curtain been hanging in my bathroom?" Probably not a question you ask yourself everyday, huh? It might even be hard to recall exactly when that curtain began residing in your necessary room. Well, I was forced to consider this very thought several weeks ago. It all started when....

The phone rings. I pick it up seeing that it's my sister. "OK" she begins. "I have something to tell you that I've been wanting to say for a long time and I wasn't sure if I should, but now I decided I am just going to say it, because a long time ago you visited my house and had something you wanted to tell me and you weren't sure if you should, and you did. It was when I lived in Nappanee. Do you remember what you told me?"

"No.....I don't have any idea" I say, smiling hesitantly. After all, who starts conversations out like this anyway!!

"Well" she continues. "You didn't want to tell me cause you didn't want to hurt my feeling but you did any way and I am so glad you did. So...I thought... I am just going to tell her this even though I wasn't sure if I should"

Through the phone, I hear kids in the background and at this point she says "Oh, hang on, I'm babysitting, gotta go. I'll call you back"

I am left holding the silent phone in my hand, with my jaw lowered a few inches "Uhh...wha...hmph!"

After what seemed like an e-t-e-r-n-i-t-y, she called back and starts in. "So, do you remember what you told me?" I didn't, and she went on to explain that when I was vacuuming for her house once, I told her that she needed to make sure and use just the hose to go around the baseboards to suck up all of the stuff that you can't pick up by using the power nozzle. Evidently I did this for her and showed her how much of a difference it makes. She has obviously been forever impacted.

Eventually it is time to find out what she needed to say to me. "First of all let me say that I really like how you have your house decorated, you've done a great job and it always looks so nice." I'm now bracing myself for whatever is coming next. "You know your shower curtain in the downstairs bathroom?" she says. "Yea," I say, "you mean the one that the water hits or the one that is supposed to look decorative but no longer does?"

"The no longer decorative one. You have had that for a long time! Seriously Jacki! I can't believe you haven't replaced it already. I mean, I'm sure it was very nice when you first put it up, but don't you think it's time for a change?"

I could not deny she had a very valid point. We had considered updating the bathroom before, but we knew it meant not just the shower curtain, but taking down the wall paper, painting, and probably even redoing the floor. Since the kitchen and bathroom share the same linoleum, I had just dismissed the thought since redoing the kitchen floor is such a huge job.

I started considering my sisters suggestion ( if you can call it a suggestion) and counted back. Way back!! It had been almost 22 YEARS since we first hung that shower curtain!!! My husband and I decided that we were ready for a change and we would take on the task. We realized that it would be fine to just redo the bathroom floor and save the kitchen for another time.

This all happened at the same time that I was starting my new online quilt shop. How convenient!! What a great place for me to shop for a new shower curtain!! I quickly found the color scheme I wanted to use and we started in. This is the Kettle Grove patchwork shower curtain. It is mostly blacks and creams with a combination of plaids and vintage looking fabrics. Our home was built in 189o. I love the primitive decorating style and over the years we have collected a few antiques to help coordinate everything. The medicine cabinet was given to us when my grandparents moved out of their older home and into a smaller place.

We love the new look we have in our bathroom! It was very worth the time and energy it took to make the change!

In one of my summer garage sale outings I had picked up this old wooden box.

I gave it a makeover too. I love old mason jars and wanted to display some. It worked as a perfect way to keep a few bathroom necessities easy to find.

25 Years Ago Today We Were Married!!

August 17th, 1985 at 7:00pm, I married Jonathan Bruce Alcorn and we began our exciting life journey! When my son called this morning to give us his anniversary wishes, he asked if it felt like 25 years. As I reflect on that, in some ways it seems like just yesterday and in other ways not so much. Especially as I look back at old pictures and take a stroll through memory lane I am reminded of all the blessings, joys and love we have shared together. When you pile each beautiful memory on top of the next one, you know it has to have been quite a while as there are so many. God has truly caused our cup to overflow with His love, mercy and goodness!! We also praise God for the wonderfully supportive family we both have.

I awoke today to find several (25 to be exact) little notes from my husband placed in various locations around the house. Each one was held in place with a piece of chocolate and had endearing terms and phrases on them. :) He made a special attempt to put them next to things I would use or need this morning. I had found each one by 7:00 am by just simply going about my morning routine. He is so very thoughtful! Creative surprises like this one are common for our relationship and I value the time and energy he puts into making my days special.

We also found this arrangement waiting for us on the dining room table this morning. I must tell you about this special 25th anniversary sugar and creamer. It belonged to my grandparents who had been married 72 years before Grandma passed away over a year ago. While going through Grandma's things, my daughters found this set and decided to keep it with plans to give it back to us today. It was filled with chocolate and surrounded with flowers our youngest daughter had picked from the garden early this morning. A special treasure indeed!

Let me tell you about my amazing husband! I so appreciate all that he is and does. We met in March of 1984 at Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana on the steps of the library after I had gone in and out of the library 3 times hoping to ACCIDENTLY run into him. ( I wish you could see me smiling as I type)

We dated about for about a month before he asked me if I only wanted to date him. Back then we called it "going steady".

I had wanted to do a year of volunteer work and I left for Florida to work at a shelter home for abused and neglected children in August, 1984. Jon was working at Wendy's and finishing his senior year in college. While apart, we called once a week and wrote each other often. Today, with words like email, texting, posting and updating being the most common forms of communication, I may need to explain what I mean by "wrote each other" - we started with a piece of paper, a pencil or pen, an envelope and a stamp. Then, in our own handwriting we penned out our thoughts for each other, events of the day, happenings in our families, work and school. We shared with each other our plans and dreams for the future. We talked about ways God was working in our hearts and lives. I longed for each phone call and those letters are still very precious to me today.

We were engaged in March, 1985 when I came home for a week of vacation. We had spent the day together and ended our evening on a walk around Winona Lake. Jon had built a small bonfire in the pit behind Beyer Home. This was also the place we had had our first kiss. Jon sang me his song for me,"Just like me" by Sweet Comfort band and asked me to marry him.

We were married less than four months later, moved to Argos where Jon is a teacher. We soon began building our family. We have a son and 3 daughters. My husband is a great Dad and has always been very helpful around the house. He truly has servants heart and purposefully does things to benefit those around him.

We often talk about how we have enjoyed each stage of parenting our children. Of course, some stages were more fun than others! Jon has helped to set a Godly tone in our home. Our relationship the Lord is very important to us and we have tried to implement biblical principles into daily life when teaching the kids how to make good choices.

I thank God for bringing Jon into my life! I am so grateful to be his wife and to have had the privilege of raising our kids together. He a faithful, dedicated, hardworking and generous man and my life is truly blessed by knowing him.

I trust we can have at least another 25 years doing life together in the future.
